A huge thank you to Amicalola EMC for the generous Bright Ideas grants! Mrs. Chapman received a $1,000 grant for her project "Let's Build Together," which will be used to purchase tools for agriculture mechanics. Mrs. Hardison's project, "Big Blue Blocks," a fantastic outdoor STEM initiative being added to our playground, also received a $1,000 grant. We can't wait to surprise our students with these fun new learning opportunities. Congratulations to both teachers, and thank you again, Amicalola EMC!

In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, kindergartners and first-graders learned about the world's most popular sport – soccer! Known as ‘fútbol’ in Spanish, the sport is an integral part of Hispanic culture. After reading "Pelé, King of Soccer" by Monica Brown, students were inspired by Pelé, who became a soccer legend as the first man to score 1,000 goals. They then practiced some fancy footwork in the media center. Here are Mrs. Roper's kindergartners and Mrs. Smith's first graders working hard on their soccer drills!

Ahoy, mateys! Congratulations to Monday's winners as we celebrate National School Lunch Week!

Mrs. Sutton's third grade mathematicians are hard at work representing multiplication in multiple ways! Check out their desks—Expo markers are busy as they draw arrays, demonstrate repeated addition, create equal groups, and use the box model, among other strategies. Learning math can be so much fun!

Did someone say "S'mores?" Mrs. Romesberg's first graders are getting creative with writing using the “S’mores Paragraph Strategy!” The sweet graham cracker on top is their opening topic sentence, followed by the gooey marshmallow and chocolate as detail sentences, and the bottom graham cracker wraps it all up with a closing sentence. What a delicious way to learn!

Mrs. Roper's kindergartners are on a Shape Hunt! They’re taking their learning outdoors and discovering that 2D shapes are all around us. What a wonderful way to make real-world connections, blending math with exploration!

Congratulations to two amazing kindergarten readers! Grace from Ms. Jenkins' class and Rhett from Mrs. Abbott's class have mastered ALL of their kindergarten sight words! Now, they’re ready to tackle first-grade sight words. Plus, both earned a special visit to the Book Vending Machine! We are so proud of these budding readers! Keep up the fantastic work, Grace and Rhett!

After reading "Round Is A Mooncake" by Roseanne Thong, Mrs. Bryson's kindergartners went on a 2D Shape Hunt around the classroom! Each time they found a shape, they drew a picture of it. This hands-on activity not only sparked their interest but also helped them develop spatial awareness and the ability to describe and compare objects. Great job, shape explorers!

It's Georgia PreK Week! We're thrilled to welcome several of our local leaders into our media center for this special occasion. Commissioner Kris Stancil, Commissioner Josh Tippens, and Mayor Kirk Raffield visited our Pre-K students and shared their love of reading.
This is a wonderful opportunity for our leaders to experience the magic of early education firsthand. Thank you to everyone who took the time to visit and read to our youngest learners!

Hooray for Mrs. Abbott's kindergarten readers! They’ve been working hard during Independent Reading time, and recently, they've started using "whisper phones." The kids love how these phones amplify their voices, making it easier to hear the sounds and words. This fun tool is helping them boost their fluency and comprehension!

On the hunt for new words! Mrs. Hamilton's class had a blast as they reviewed their favorite Fall vocabulary words and turned learning into an exciting Scavenger Hunt! Students explored the room, searching for Fall-themed words and coloring them on their collection sheets.

Hey Hawks, let's show our support for the PHS Dragons on Friday, 10/18/2024. In honor of Homecoming, let's "Paint the Town Green!" and wear green. Go Dragons!

And the Hawk goes to... Abby Tippens! Mrs. Abbott passed the Hawk to her with these heartfelt words: "She is a great teacher and pours her heart and soul into each and every student. Abby cares for her students far beyond academics and is always one of the first to volunteer for committees, courses, or activities at our school." Congratulations, Mrs. Tippens!

Huge shoutout to our superstar readers from kindergarten! Evelyn from Mrs. Bryson's class and Odin from Ms. Jenkin's class have mastered their end-of-the-year sight words already! As a reward, they’ve earned a trip to the Book Vending Machine to pick out brand new books! Congratulations, Evelyn and Odin!

S’more Writing Fun in 2nd Grade! Mrs. Shealey's students worked in small groups to build a perfect paragraph using the S’more Technique! They crafted a tasty topic sentence (the graham cracker crust), added juicy details (the marshmallow), sweetened it up with examples (the chocolate), and wrapped it all up with a closing sentence (another graham cracker crust).

Super Readers in Action! Students in Mrs. Tippens’ 2nd grade ELA class are hard at work, practicing strategies to tackle unfamiliar words as they whisper read "King Midas," an exciting adaptation of a Greek myth. Keep up the fantastic work!

Our box truck is loaded with much-needed hurricane relief supplies and soon will be heading out alongside vehicles from PHS AG, Pickens County Young Farmers, and FFA alumni to make a difference! A huge thank you for your incredible generosity—your donations filled Mrs. Chapman's classroom! Her students played a vital role in sorting and organizing everything before loading. Together, we’re making an impact and providing aid to Georgians in need!

Congratulations to our amazing students who earned the Perseverance Award this week! You showed determination and powered through when things seemed tough. We’re so proud of you for modeling that you can do hard things well! Keep up the great work!

Mrs. Roper's reading rockstars! A big shoutout to Nova and Liam for mastering ALL of the kindergarten sight words! As "readers gotta read," they earned a special trip to the Book Vending Machine to choose a brand new book! Congratulations, Nova and Liam! Keep up the great work!

Our kindergartners in Mrs. Gartrell's class are hard at work learning their numbers and letter sounds! Check out these little Hawks building number towers, matching beginning sounds, spinning and finding numbers, and creating numbers in different ways.
